How to be interesting over text
Most flat conversations are not caused by a lack of wit. They are caused by both people withholding specifics.
"Busy week" is a summary. There is nothing in it to reply to. "I spent forty minutes arguing with a self-checkout in front of a queue" is the same week, described specifically, and it hands the other person something to react to.
That is nearly the whole skill, and it is not a personality trait. Specific reliably reads as more interesting than clever, which is fortunate, because trying to be funny is where most people go wrong, a joke that lands needs shared context, and early on there is not much.
The failure this produces is predictable: two people exchange pleasantries, generate no new information, and after five turns there is genuinely nothing left to say. Both then read the silence as the other person losing interest.
Four habits, in order of effect
1. Replace summaries with specifics. The single highest-leverage change.
| Summary | Specific |
|---|---|
| "Busy week" | "I have had four meetings that were emails" |
| "Just watched a film" | "Watched a film so bad I checked twice whether it was a parody" |
| "Went for a walk" | "Walked past a shop selling nothing but hot sauce and now have questions" |
| "Work was fine" | "A man in my office has started microwaving fish. This is a developing situation" |
None of those are jokes. They are details, and details are what a reply attaches to.
2. Give before you ask. Say something about your day before asking about theirs. It models the kind of answer you want and gives them something to react to. A question with nothing attached asks them to do all the work.
3. Match every question with something of your own. Question, answer, question, answer is interview mode. It feels like interest and reads like a form.
4. Have an opinion about something small. Not a controversial one. A trivial one, held with mock seriousness. "Pineapple on pizza is fine and I will not be taking questions" invites a reply from anyone.
Why trying to be funny backfires
A joke is a bid with a high failure cost. When it lands, it is great. When it does not, the other person has to decide whether to acknowledge it, and that is work you have handed them.
Being specific has almost no failure cost. Worst case, they do not pick it up and you offer another. There is no awkwardness in a detail that goes unremarked.
And specificity produces the context jokes need. After a week of actual detail, a joke has something to be about. Two people who have exchanged nothing but pleasantries have nothing for humour to attach to, which is exactly why early jokes so often land flat and feel like effort.
The thing that actually makes someone interesting to talk to
Curiosity, and it shows. Not asking more questions, which is interview mode. Noticing something specific in what they said and following it.
Them: "I've been trying to learn to skateboard, badly." ❌ "Oh nice, how long have you been doing that?" ✅ "Badly how? Falling badly, or the specific humiliation of not being able to push off?"
The second one shows you read the sentence. That is the whole difference, and it costs nothing but attention.
When it is genuinely one-sided
None of this fixes a conversation where only one person is contributing. If you have offered several specifics, followed what they said, and got summaries back three times, that is information rather than a technique problem.
Momentum is data. If you have opened the last three exchanges and each ran four messages, another good specific will not change the shape. When the reply is one word. · Restarting a dead conversation, and when not to.
The part that is hard
All of this is obvious written down. Producing a specific at 9pm, when you are tired and the message has been sitting unanswered for an hour, is a different thing, and that gap is a rehearsal problem rather than an information problem.
FlirtGym is built for that: over 100 scenarios across texting, dating apps and in person, with a character whose interest is earned rather than owed. One genuinely off-putting message ends it at any setting, interest drains on a visible meter, and a debrief afterwards names what cooled her. Wingman returns three replies from a screenshot with the reason each one works, so the pattern transfers instead of being pasted.
Small, new app: very few ratings, no press. The honest comparison against everything else. · The research behind practice.
About FlirtGym
FlirtGym is an iOS app from Baker Ventures LLC for practising dating conversations. Two things: reply suggestions from a screenshot, three at a time, each with the reason it works, and a practice mode where you rehearse a conversation that is not real and the other side can actually lose interest.
The second part is the one that matters. A practice partner who always responds warmly is reassurance, not practice, so in FlirtGym the conversation can be lost. It is built for the person who freezes at the blank reply box, not for anyone who has been told they need fixing. FlirtGym does not use looksmaxxing language, does not rank people, and promises no outcome. The guides and comparisons on this site are free and need no account.
Questions and answers
How do I make my texting more interesting?
Give specifics rather than summaries. "Busy week" is a summary and there is nothing to reply to. "I spent forty minutes arguing with a self-checkout" is a specific and it hands the other person something to react to. Most flat conversations are caused by withholding detail, not by lack of wit.
Why do my conversations feel boring?
Usually because both people are exchanging status updates rather than information. Question, answer, question, answer produces no new material, so after five turns there is genuinely nothing left to say and both people assume the other lost interest.
Should I try to be funny over text?
Trying to be funny is where most people go wrong, because a joke that lands needs shared context and there is not much of it early on. Being specific reliably reads as more interesting than being clever, and it produces the shared context that makes jokes possible later.
What should I text instead of asking how their day was?
Tell them something about yours first, specifically. That gives them a model of the kind of answer you want and something to react to. A question with nothing attached asks them to do all the work of being interesting.
How do I keep a conversation going without interviewing them?
Match every question with something of your own. Interview mode is a run of questions with nothing attached, and it makes the other person do all the work while giving them nothing to respond to except another question.
