How to tell if they are interested over text

Updated September 7, 2026 · published by Baker Ventures LLC · sources cited inline

Reply speed tells you almost nothing. It tracks how busy someone is and how they relate to their phone, and it varies hugely between people who are equally interested.

Three things do most of the work:

  1. Do they ever start it? Over a couple of weeks, does any conversation begin with them.
  2. Do they ask you anything back? A conversation where all the questions run one way is being tolerated, not enjoyed.
  3. Do they add something you did not ask for? A detail, a joke, a story that goes past the answer. That is someone spending effort.

Two of three is a good sign. Zero of three, repeated over weeks, is an answer.

And the honest part: when it is genuinely ambiguous, no amount of rereading resolves it. Ask. Something specific, with a day and an activity. A warm non-answer to a specific suggestion, twice, is the information you were trying to extract from message timestamps.

Signals that are actually weak

Reply speed. Some people answer in seconds all day. Some check twice. Neither is a verdict.

Message length. People text how they text. Short is not cold, long is not keen.

Emoji and punctuation. A full stop is not hostility. Endless analysis of tone in a medium with no tone is the single biggest waste of attention in dating.

Being left on read once. Common, usually meaningless, and the worst possible thing to respond to as though it were a message. What to do when you are left on read.

One flat reply. Everyone has bad days. It matters if it is the pattern, and only then. When you get one word replies.

Signals that are actually strong

Initiation. Someone who starts conversations is choosing to think about you when you are not on their screen.

Questions back. Reciprocity is the most informative thing in early texting and it takes about three exchanges to read.

Elaboration. Answering the question and then adding something. Effort you did not request.

Continuity. Referring to something from days ago. It means the conversation stayed with them.

Moving toward meeting. Suggesting, agreeing quickly, proposing an alternative when they cannot make it. A counter-offer is one of the clearest positive signals there is, and it is much more informative than enthusiasm in the abstract.

The pattern to watch, not the message

One data point about a stranger is a data point, not a flag.

What you are looking for is direction across two or three weeks. Is this speeding up or slowing down? Momentum is the useful thing and almost nobody tracks it, because each individual message feels like the thing to evaluate.

A useful check: think back a fortnight. Who started more conversations then, and who starts them now. If the answer has moved, that is real information. If it has not moved and it was always you, that is also real information.

The ambiguous case has one exit

Warm replies, nothing moving. This is the most common shape of the problem and it can run for months.

Ask once, specifically. Not "we should hang out sometime." A day and an activity. "There's a place doing pizza on Thursday, want to go?"

Three outcomes, all useful:

Asking someone out over text. · When they flake.

Why this is hard to learn on your own

You only ever see your own conversations, you never find out why someone lost interest, and the feedback that would teach you never arrives. So people substitute rules, and the rules are mostly about timing, because timing is the only variable that is easy to observe.

That is the gap FlirtGym is built for. In a practice conversation the other side can go cool, and you can see what changed the temperature: the three questions in a row that read like an interview, the reply that answered nothing, the gap that let it die. A practice partner who stays warm no matter what you send is reassurance, not practice.

About FlirtGym

FlirtGym is an iOS app from Baker Ventures LLC for practising dating conversations. Two things: reply suggestions from a screenshot, three at a time, each with the reason it works, and a practice mode where you rehearse a conversation that is not real and the other side can actually lose interest.

The second part is the one that matters. A practice partner who always responds warmly is reassurance, not practice, so in FlirtGym the conversation can be lost. It is built for the person who freezes at the blank reply box, not for anyone who has been told they need fixing. FlirtGym does not use looksmaxxing language, does not rank people, and promises no outcome. The guides and comparisons on this site are free and need no account.

Questions and answers

How can you tell if someone is interested over text?

Look at whether effort is roughly matched. Do they ever start a conversation, do they ask you anything back, and do they add something you did not ask for. Those three tell you far more than reply speed, message length or emoji use.

Does a slow reply mean they are not interested?

Usually not. Reply speed tracks how busy someone is and how they use their phone, and it varies enormously between people who are equally interested. Reading it as a signal produces wrong conclusions in both directions.

What does it mean if they only reply and never start conversations?

On its own it can be shyness or habit. Repeated over weeks, with no questions back and no elaboration, it is usually a polite version of not very interested. The pattern matters, one instance does not.

How many messages should you send before asking them out?

Fewer than most people do. Once there has been a real exchange with some back and forth, suggesting something specific is reasonable, and continuing to text indefinitely lowers the odds rather than raising them.

What if they are warm but never make plans?

Ask once, specifically, with a day and an activity. A warm non-answer to a specific suggestion, twice, is your answer. This is the fastest way out of an ambiguity that can otherwise last months.

Is over-analysing texts a bad sign about me?

No, it is extremely common and it comes from having very little information and caring about the outcome. The way out is not better analysis, it is a question that produces information.
