Moving a conversation off the app
A conversation that only exists inside a dating app is on a clock.
It competes with every other conversation in that app, it lives behind a notification most people have muted, and it disappears entirely the moment either person unmatches, deletes the app, or takes a break. None of that reflects how interested anyone was.
Move it once there has been real back and forth, which is usually sooner than people do it. Two or three genuine exchanges is plenty.
Attach it to a reason and keep it small:
"This is easier to sort out over text, what's your number?"
That is logistics, not a declaration, which is exactly what makes it easy to say yes to. Compare it with "I'd love to get to know you better, can I have your number," which asks them to make a decision about the whole thing.
If the momentum is genuinely there, suggesting a plan is often better than a number swap, because the plan is what the number was for. "There's a place doing pizza on Thursday, want to go?" gets you both the date and the number.
And if they prefer to stay in the app, take it lightly. It is a safety preference as often as anything else, and pushing turns a preference into a problem.
Why sooner beats later
The common error is not moving too fast. It is waiting until the conversation has gone flat and then trying to move it, at which point the move looks like a rescue attempt and usually is.
Move while it is going well. A conversation with momentum survives the change of medium easily. One that has stalled does not, and a number swap cannot create interest that was not there. Restarting a conversation that stalled.
There is also a practical reason that has nothing to do with strategy: people delete these apps constantly, often mid-conversation, for reasons entirely unrelated to you. A conversation you liked can simply cease to exist.
How to ask
With a reason. "Easier over text." "I'm barely on here." "So I stop missing your messages."
Offering yours first is a small, effective variant, because it hands over something rather than asking for something.
"I'm hopeless at checking this app. Mine's [number] if you'd rather text."
Short. One line, in the flow of the conversation, not as its own moment.
Not with a paragraph about why you like talking to them. That converts a logistical request into a declaration, and declarations are harder to answer casually.
If they say no
Some people keep dating conversations in the app on purpose, and it is often about safety rather than interest. Others have been burned by giving out a number too early.
Take it lightly, in half a sentence, and continue.
"Fair enough, this works too."
Then do not ask again for a while, and do not treat it as a signal. Treating a preference as a verdict is how people talk themselves out of conversations that were going fine. How to tell if they are interested.
Which platform
Whatever they use. Number, WhatsApp, Instagram, whichever is normal where you are.
Instagram is a lower-commitment ask than a number in a lot of places, and it works. It also comes with a profile attached, which some people like and some find like being interviewed.
Do not negotiate the platform. If they offer one, take it.
After the move
Send something soon after, not three days later. The first message on the new channel should carry the conversation forward, not restart it.
"Right, this is me. So you were saying the flat was a disaster."
Picking up mid-thread is the whole technique. A new channel that opens with "hey" has thrown away everything you had. How to be interesting over text. · Moving to a call or a voice note. · Asking someone out over text.
Why this is hard to get right on your own
The ask is small, it happens once per conversation, and the only feedback is whether it worked, which tells you nothing about why. So people build rules out of two or three experiences and then follow them for years.
That is the gap FlirtGym is built for. A practice conversation where the other side can lose interest lets you find out what asking too early or too heavily actually does, without doing it to someone you liked. A practice partner who stays warm no matter what you send is reassurance rather than practice, which is a different product. Practice versus reassurance. · Why you have never been allowed to practise this.

About FlirtGym
FlirtGym is an iOS app from Baker Ventures LLC for practising dating conversations. Two things: reply suggestions from a screenshot, three at a time, each with the reason it works, and a practice mode where you rehearse a conversation that is not real and the other side can actually lose interest.
The second part is the one that matters. A practice partner who always responds warmly is reassurance, not practice, so in FlirtGym the conversation can be lost. It is built for the person who freezes at the blank reply box, not for anyone who has been told they need fixing. FlirtGym does not use looksmaxxing language, does not rank people, and promises no outcome. The guides and comparisons on this site are free and need no account.
Questions and answers
When should you move a conversation off a dating app?
Once there has been real back and forth and some momentum, which is usually sooner than people do it. A conversation that stays in the app competes with every other conversation in that app, and it disappears the moment either person deletes it.
How do you ask for someone's number?
Attach it to a reason and keep it small. Easier to sort this out over text is a complete explanation, and it turns the request into logistics rather than a declaration.
Is it too early to ask for a number after a few messages?
Rarely. A few real exchanges is enough for most people, and the more common error by a wide margin is waiting so long that the conversation goes flat first.
What if they say they prefer to stay on the app?
Take it lightly and carry on. Plenty of people keep dating conversations in the app deliberately, and it is a safety preference as often as it is anything else. Pushing it turns a preference into a problem.
Should you suggest meeting instead of moving to text?
If the momentum is there, suggesting something specific is often better than a number swap, because a plan is what the number was for. The number can follow the plan rather than preceding it.
What if the conversation dies after you move it?
It happens, and it usually means the momentum was already thinner than it looked. A change of medium does not create interest, it only removes an obstacle.
